Urban Design Research Institute (UDRI)

Project

UDRI launched ‘DP24SEVEN’, an initiative that will upgrade the Development Plan of Mumbai. Apart from being a stakeholder, the Narotam Sekhsaria Foundation has supported this project by creating public awareness and enabling citizens to participate actively in this upgradation process. The support rendered by the Narotam Sekhsaria Foundation has also led to the creation of public forums, the publication of the Mumbai DP24SEVEN project, and the dissemination of reports on the project to the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM).

Objective

UDRI aims to generate awareness on various issues concerning the city, provide content to public debate, and discuss urban issues. The institute also works to facilitate a greater role for architects, designers and relevant stakeholders in the process of planning solutions for these issues. One of UDRI’s main concerns is the outdated Development Plan of Mumbai which needs to be updated with respect to the current status of the city.

About the Organisation

Established in 1984, UDRI is a public charitable trust that aims to enrich the understanding of the urban space and to work towards its improvement. The Institute also endeavours to create awareness on various urban issues and to facilitate interaction by involving multiple stakeholders and submitting the reports to the MCGM.

Impact

UDRI’s intervention with the Mumbai Development Plan has led to the democratization of the process and for the first time created an opportunity for citizens and civil society orgnaisations to contribute to the DP
