Issue

In India there is severe gap in health, education and employment opportunities for children with disability. Evidence shows that institutionalized rehabilitation of children with disabilities is not a sustainable arrangement. Hence in many developing countries innovative models in community based rehabilitation is being demonstrated.

Project

The Narotam Sekhsaria Foundation supports the community rehabilitation programme and advocacy efforts of the Prabhat Education Foundation to create an enabling environment for children with special needs.

Organisation

The Prabhat Education Foundation is the outcome of efforts which began in 2003 to serve children with special needs in Ahmedabad. Prabhat works in three major areas: servicesthrough its life-skills programme at the two Prabhat centres; the Community-Based Rehabilitation Programme (CBR) serving children, families and communities who cannot access the centres due to problems of mobility or awareness, and advocacy through networking and partnerships to help strengthen each of these services.

Impact

The project has facilitated community based rehabilitation of children from resource poor backgrounds in Gujarat.
