Vertical Greens in Urban Environments as Career Corridors for Disadvantaged Youth

Issue

Youth in peri-urban areas lack resources and know-how to tap into entrepreneurial and livelihood opportunities. Urban areas themselves, suffer from mismanagement of micro-environments.

Project

With the support of the Narotam Sekhsaria Foundation, the project, sited in rapidly urbanising areas of suburban Kolkata, aligns environmental and livelihood concerns by working with youth to design modules for vertical gardens, and facilitating an entrepreneurial model for the same.

Objective

The project aims to address ecological imbalance at the micro-urban scale while providing a viable livelihood option for disadvantaged youth.

Impact

The project has successfully developed vertical green modules and established an entrepreneurial framework, including bank linkages and commitments from construction firms, with which youth and their communities can access a potentially lucrative livelihood.
