Project

The project intends to develop an institute with all amenities and services that would cater to the specific needs of children with hearing disabilities. This project includes a low-cost diagnostic centre, professional early intervention for children below 4 years, developing educational material for primary and secondary school children and mobile diagnosis van to cater to the needs of children in rural areas. Apart from core infrastructure, this project involves other allied aspects like human resource training within the institute and other like-minded organisations, vocational training and management skill development of the children to increase livelihood opportunities and counselling of the family.

About the Organisation

Umang Education and Research Centre for the hearing impaired is run by Shrimad Rajchandra Seva Kendra trust formed in 2004 in Ahmedabad. The centre is actively involved in providing inclusive education and comprehensible facilities to those with hearing impairment in urban as well as in rural areas

Issue

According to PWD Act 1995, hearing disabled is a person who has a minimum of 60Dbhl of hearing impairment in the better ear in speech conversation frequencies. According to 2011 census, 20% of total disable people in India are deaf. One of the critical challenges for differently abled people including those with hearing impairment is the lack of employment since many do not get education which makes them more vulnerable in the society.
